OY Session 14

Icebreaker: Expressing gratitude and practicing affirmations is a great way to build confidence and reduce stress. Check out this video for some inspiration!

Today's Mission

Have you ever wondered what makes some people seem so confident? Usually, it’s about knowing yourself and communicating who you are and what you stand for. Sometimes it’s literally about how you stand in your body while you talk with others.

There is so much to communicating who you are and what is important to you. Building from Session 3, today you will explore communication skills for workplace success and reflect on the many ways you communicate to others.

Don’t forget, you get to drive the narrative on who people know you are.

effective COMMUNICATION

Today's Mission

Today you will:

  • Understand communication in the workplace

  • Analyze approaches to claiming power through communication techniques including body language

  • Create a 2-minute story about your communication style

Portfolio Workbook Steps: Each step should take 1 hour.

STEP 1

First, you will explore different styles of communication. Check out “Communication Skills for Workplace Success: Employers Look for These Communication Skills.” Read through this document to understand the Top 10 Communication Skills in workplaces. While you’re doing this, you may want to click through some of the hyperlinks there. Then, use your Workbook to capture your top three styles.

Next, practice active listening with a friend, family member, or a member of your Design Team. Check out this link to support building your active listening skills. Once you’ve finished practicing, reflect on the experience in your Workbook.

Remember, joining a workplace means joining a team, and cultivating your style will support your project this summer and your career journey.

STEP 2

Next, watch the famous Ted Talk “Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are” to understand ways that you can communicate your power through your body language. While you’re watching it, stand up and take a turn doing all the poses proposed.

What did you learn about yourself? What’s one of your power poses?

STEP 3

Finally, create a 2-minute TED Talk of your own about your communication style. Check out this link to 8 steps to run a great TED Talk. After you have read through the 8 steps, draft your own 2-minute TED Talk. Write it out, practice it, and record yourself talking for two minutes about something you feel strongly about.

Now, check-in with your host site for directions for sharing your digital portfolio items!

Before you move on the Session 15, please complete the Final OY PBL Experience Survey. Your feedback will be used to strengthen our work.

Workplace Challenge Tip: Try and practice your power pose as you prepare to showcase your Workplace Project!
