Remember, these icebreakers are optional.
Today's Mission
You and your host site are at the center of your summer experience! Together you will use a project-based learning approach (PBL) to gain skills, problem-solve and contribute to your community.
This session focuses on learning more about PBL, exploring your dreams and aspirations, and learning more about your host site.
Welcome to Summer 2020!
GOALS
Today, you will:
Understand the goals of your summer learning experience
Identify where you are today in your self-discovery journey
Create a vision of where you see yourself in the future.
Now, move through the three Portfolio Steps below!
Portofolio Workbook Steps: Each step should take 1 hour.
Portfolio step 1
Watch this video on Project Based Learning (PBL). Please note, the video is described PBL in a traditional school environment, but we think it applies here as well! After viewing, answer the following questions using your Workbook:
What are 3 things you heard in the video about how PBL will help you build skills?
What are 2 things you hope to learn or achieve through PBL this summer?
What is one question you have about PBL?
What support do you need from your host site?
You may answer the questions by
Creating a 2-minute video using your phone OR
Completing the 3-2-1 + reflection in your Workbook.
portfolio step 2
2020 has led many people to reimagine what matters to them. Your participant workbook has an organizer to help you capture your thoughts about what matters to you. When you’ve completed it, choose a creative expression of your vision for yourself.
You can complete one of the following:
Free draw
Make a front page news story (use the template in your Workbook to guide you)
Create a comic strip (use the template in your Workbook to guide you) or the site Write Comics
Design an online collage of where you want to be in the future
Use the answers you recorded in your graphic organizer to support your work!
PORTFOLIO step 3
Whenever you are interested in learning more about a potential job, college or opportunity, find out all you can from their online media. For the final step in Session 1, you will go on a virtual scavenger hunt.
Your mission is to learn more about your organization through its digital presence. This includes: their Website, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram accounts.
Here are the things to discover:
Identify the mission of the agency
Visit the “about us” page to learn who works on the team and/or who leads the organization.
Identify the programs or services provided
Identify one thing that you found that’s kind of cool about your organization.
Now, record your findings using one of the following:
The graphic organizer in your Workbook OR
Create a 2 minute infomercial about your host site OR
Make an infographic (use the site to sign up and search for infographic templates and create your own)
