YY session 7

Icebreaker: Here’s a fun video about paying attention!

Today's Mission

Have you ever wondered why some efforts are successful and others aren't? The secret sauce is having goals and executing them. After establishing your “dream” the Design phase focuses on the practical strategies to make the dream a reality. Goal setting, gathering resources, asset mapping and creating strategies are three parts of this design phase. What might be your solution or response to the problem? How will your project shed light on the issue, or create change?

Defining your goals

GOALS

Today you will:

  • Understand the importance of setting goals and making them SMART.

  • Analyze your community ‘s assets and resources

  • Create a strategy plan for your project

Portfolio Workbook Steps: Each step should take 1 hour.

STEP 1

Goals Setting: Michael Jordan once said “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” Goals are about setting expectations. Now that you have analyzed the project and settled on a solution, it’s time to set goals.

To create a strong and achievable plan for your project, complete SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievement, Relevant, Time-Bound) Goals in your Workbook.

STEP 2

Resources: Now you can begin to explore the assets and resources in your community that can be a part of the solution. What local resources (businesses, people, spaces, etc.) can help make your project a success?

Community Asset mapping is an important tool of civic engagement. It allows you to identify what is already in place to support your goals. The Citizens Committee for Children of New York's Community is a great place to get started. Check out your community's profile to learn more.

Use your Workbook to record what you discover.

STEP 3

Strategy: A strategy is an essential part of planning because it helps you understand how each step you take will move you closer to achieving your project-based learning goals. Your strategy defines your long-term goal (the final outcome of your PBL community change project) and how you plan to achieve it through specific tactics.

Complete the Strategy Organizer in your Workbook to share with your team.

Before you move on the Session 8, please complete the PBL Experience Survey. Your feedback will be used to strengthen this experience.

Participants may continue to use the Hats & Ladders App to explore careers and complete skill-building activity Ladders.
